Implementing the Standards. Redefining Computation. The NCTM Standards regarding whole number computation and computation and estimation are reviewed and explored.
Activities for implementing this portion of the Standards in grades K-4 and are suggested. Activities are given for solving verbal subtraction problems. Take-away and comparison situations are described, and three levels of activities to model the situations are given: one involving concrete materials and verbal descriptions; the second with these plus written symbols; and the third encouraging mental images.
Fraction strips are suggested as good conceptual models to focus on the meaning of fractions. Making the strips, beginning activities, connecting symbols, more concept activities, and working with two fractions are each illustrated.
