Click to expand Oh sweet jesus!!! I hope there isn't a maxtor in mine. I am a computer techie and we have loads of maxtor drives failing everyweek at work. They are so unreliable.
Thats not great news, touch wood mines been running like a dream. I was hopeing, the unit would format it or something but it just gave an alert error message and would not do anything!!!!. I've tried it the other way round - taking the drive a Maxtor Diamondmax QuickView from the XS32 and putting it into my pc.
End result - drive needs to be allocated in order for windows to read it and I'm not going to risk this on a month old unit.
I've read somewhere that the operating system for the XS32 is stored on the HDD and that if you upgrade the drive, you need to transfer this OS as well. Might have some more luck when I get the multi-region upgrade disk from my dealer - hopefully, it'll have the OS as well! Let you know how I get on. Thanks you for your brave efforts Skipton01, it is well appreciated. Please keep us all informed of how you get on.
Using Ghost or Drive Image was a method I thought could work. It may be worth considering using one of these programs skipton Are there any updates on the attempted upgrade of the hard disk on the tosh? Hi all - I got the multi-region disc last week after an inordinate delay and it's worked as planned on the XS However, all attempts at reading it in my pc are in vain.
The next thing I'm gonna try is to put a blank hard drive into the XS and then try the multi-region upgrade procedure to see if it'll initialise the drive with Tosh's OS. If this works great, if not, I'll get hold of a copy of a disc imager and try to clone the Tosh HDD onto the larger replacement. Keep you informed, so watch this space! Thanks for the update Skipton I have eagerly been waiting to hear if you had made any progress with the upgrade. Thanks for the effort. No joy yet I'm afraid I've now got a copy of Ghost, but it seems only to work with Windows drives and I can't mount the Tosh drive with a drive letter without writing to the boot sector.
So, anyone out there of a pc techy nature - do you know of any other cloning software which will run from a floppy, under the BIOS? Powerquest Drive image is another cloning software. If it is a Maxtor drive, you can also get some software from their site.
I think it is called Powermax or something similar to that. Powerquest or Ghost don't work. That'll give you up to hours of recording time, although there is one minor catch here; the unit will only record in single blocks of eight hours each. For many users that won't be too much of an obstacle, but if you like recording long sporting events, or even program marathons on Foxtel, you'll have to do some careful stopping to record everything you want.
The depth of the RD-XS34's feature set becomes apparent when you first lift up the weighty page manual, which covers everything that the unit can do in quite exhausting depth. To briefly cover the most interesting features, it's capable of progressive scan playback, can simultaneously play back and record, use timeslip to "pause" live TV, and edit and transfer files to and from rewriteable media and the internal hard drive.
One nice feature of the editing suite - which, like the rest of the RD-XS34's feature set, is initially a bit baffling but quickly becomes second nature - is that there's a selection of menu themes for your created discs, and some of them are relatively clean and pleasant to look at.
A certain quantity of noise is to be expected from a hard-drive equipped unit, but the internal fan on our test unit seemed louder than units we've previously tested.
That's only likely to be a factor if you're using the RD-XS34 in a small space, however; in an average sized living room like the one we tested in once you step away from the TV and plonk yourself on the sofa, the noise becomes essentially inaudible.
In some cases we were able to heavily polish the discs and get some joy out of them, but it's worth keeping in mind that the unit doesn't like discs that aren't as close to perfect as possible.
As previously mentioned, the RD-XS34 isn't the easiest unit to get to grips with, but that's as much a function of it being as feature rich as it is rather than any inherent design flaws. Learn More.
I would really love a one with a EPG built in as per Philips but they are too expensive at the moment. What is the Toshiba like for programming to record a TV show? What is the "easy nav" thing like on the Tosh? Yes, you can watch a DVD whilst recording a channel. Programming is easy, I am at a disadvantage as I've been using a panasonic and just gone to a Toshiba, so I'm going through a big learning curve at the moment.
However the Tosh is a very poweful machine. I have a question too if anyone can answer it. If I am playing back a hard disk pre-recording and I want to record a little segment onto DVD, is there a way of doing it without have to go through the create chapter routine?
Thanks for that, whats it like overall? This will be my first DVD recorder. I know the blurb says easy to use.. RW ones as I want to re-record over. Thanks a bunch Andy. Last edited: Apr 8, Yep dead easy. I've only had my box for 5 days so am still trying to get to grips with it, but if you dont have an analogue aerial then you can only record the channel you are watching I could be wrong on this though Compared to my old panasonic E55, its not as easy, however once you get used to it, its not too bad.
Theres no consistancy on the colour buttons, for instance, in one menu, blue will be save, in another it will be yellow but there are instructions on screen. You can bookmark recordings made to the HDD and also edit the program cutting out commercials etc and you can also bookmark DVD's that are not finalised.
Where did you buy it from? Yes, you can create chapters and edit out the ones you dont want.
